Organic Spotlight: Nutcessity

Mike Duckworth

Meet Mike, the founding director of organic, plastic-free nut butter maker Nutcessity, a company that originated from Mike’s experience on University exchange in Perth, Australia, when he tried almond butter for the first time. On his return, after working at organic pioneers Abel & Cole and Better Food in Bristol, he realised that the UK was missing nut butter brand that happened to be completely nutritious, delicious and organic certified, AND made in a peanut-free facility.

Quite simply, Nutcessity are on a mission to become the finest, most trusted nut butter maker in the UK, and to always look for ways to put the environment first in their business model.

Currently, the business has 5 organic nut butter flavours, with more in the pipeline for release later this year. Currently, the Great Taste awarded Date & Walnut is their ‘hero’ product and has a gorgeously slightly sweet and salty edge, and shows off the terrific properties of walnuts; not commonly churned into a nut butter.

Having begun conversations with a number of lead investors, Mike is preparing for a crowdfunding campaign that is due to go live with Seedrs later in 2021, in order to grow and develop the business and begin growing a core team.

What does the future look like for Nutcessity?

We also asked Mike what he’s doing to ensure the business is sustainable:

  • Nutcessity are certified plastic-free by A Plastic Planet; their paper labels and glass jars are fully recyclable.
  • Nutcessity are also looking to start working with One Life One Tree later this year; planting the largest trees in the world in places such as Abergavenny. These trees capture 10x more CO2 than the average tree and the carbon they capture actually accelerates in volume as they grow.
  • They never use palm oil, and our ingredients are never air freighted. - 1% of our profits are donated to Frank Water (at least £300 p/a), a sustainable water and sanitation charity working in India and Nepal; helping some of the 1 in 10 people in this world who have no access to safe, clean, drinking water.
  • They have been organic certified by the Soil Association since incorporation in 2016. - Nutcessity believe in eating only plants, are are a Vegan Founded company. They see the benefits of society eating less meat and more plants.
